Summer Fireplace Myths You Need To Know
Fireplaces add a certain amount of charm and appeal in the wintertime. Not much can beat cozying up by the fireplace with friends and family members. But that charm doesn’t take a timeout during the summertime. From decoration options to necessary upkeep, your fireplace deserves your attention year-round.
Let’s take a look at some of the most common summertime fireplace myths.
Myth #1: Fireplaces are pointless in the summertime.
While you may not be burning fires year-round, it doesn’t mean that your fireplace is deemed pointless outside of the burning season. Fireplace mantels usually serve as a huge focal point for whatever room it may be in. It offers endless decoration opportunities, regardless of the season.
Myth #2: I don’t have to worry about cleaning mine until the winter.
This could be potentially true if you don’t happen to have a ton of fires in your fireplace. However, for the most part, it’s best practice to make sure you clean out your fireplace after the last burn of the season – even if that simply means scooping out the soot. Why? Because if you let that sit during warm, wet , and humid weather, there’s a chance the smell will intensify.
It’s best to get the initial cleaning done early; it’s even better to schedule you’re annual professional cleaning early in the summer so you ensure you’re ready for the chillier nights of fall and winter.
Myth #3: If I’m not using it regularly, then I don’t have to take care of it.
This may be the most harmful myth of them all. Like we just mentioned, occasional cleaning is still important – especially to mitigate the smell. But also, it’s important to briefly monitor the interior and exterior of your chimney to make sure you don’t miss any potential issues. If you simply let it sit, issues can get worse by the time you want to have a fire again in the winter.
Additionally, it’s important to take care of the creosote or byproduct that sticks to the interior walls of your chimney. With time, this can get worse. So, at the very least, make sure to get your annual chimney cleaning and monitor for any issues.
Myth #4: You can completely ignore your fireplace until the winter.
Similar to the last point, you never want to ignore a fixture in your home. If you wait to clean it until the winter, you’ll likely be waiting for an appointment and risk missing out on chilly nights to enjoy your fireplace. Schedule your chimney sweep and inspection as soon as possible.
Additionally, you’ll have to endure stinky fireplace residue throughout the most humid months of the year.
